Elie Hymowitz is a bassist and educator with over a decade of performance experience across Canada. He has appeared at major festivals including the Montreal International Jazz Festival with Nyota Parker and Laroie, Lasso Festival with Teigen Gayse and Paige Sommerville, FME in Rouyn-Noranda with Mosez Jones, and the Gaspé Festival Musique du Monde with Hansom Eli. Based in Montreal, he also performs and records regularly with both emerging and established acts, and can often be found at the city’s jam sessions.
Across all these projects runs a common thread: the bass guitar’s duty to support bandmates and serve the song. Doing this well demands sensitivity to tone, time, and feel—knowing when to lay back and when to step forward. For Elie, music is about creating something special together, bringing joy to both fellow musicians and the audience.
As a teacher, Elie focuses on developing strong fundamentals—time, tone, and touch—while helping students connect those elements to expression and creativity. His lessons emphasize active listening, phrasing, and ensemble awareness, guiding players to understand their role in the broader musical conversation.
Elie’s teaching is grounded in patience and curiosity, helping each student build confidence and discover their own unique voice on the instrument.
